A smash it since 2016, this collaborative camp with Portsmouth Music & Arts Center gives campers the opportunity to delve into the world of musical theatre through singing, acting and movement.
New Hampshire Theatre Project continues its Summer Camp programming with Build You Own Musical, a vacation experience for students aged 8 to 12. Now in its third year, this collaborative camp with Portsmouth Music & Arts Center gives campers the opportunity to delve into the world of musical theatre through singing, acting and movement.
The Build Your Own Musical camp runs July 29 through Aug 2, Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm. The camp is based at PMAC’s building on Islington Street, with the final performance taking place on Friday, August 2 at 4pm in New Hampshire Theatre Project’s black box theatre.
“Collaborating with our neighbors is extremely important to us,” explains Catherine Stewart, NHTP’s Associate Artistic Director and the camp’s performance tutor. “We know that we can offer more enriching experiences if we work with other organizations, businesses and institutions.”
Campers will explore existing musical repertoire – old favorites and modern classics, as well as drama techniques including improvisation and group writing to create their very own brand new musical.
“Last year we went on a heroine's journey, travelling through mountains, magical forests and under the sea,” continues Stewart. “And this year we’ll be creating work around the idea of making a difference in your community.” The camp is constructed so that fun games and activities help the students collaborate, and create new ideas. “Before they realize, the students have written a show - it feels like a kind of magic.”
No matter the abilities or needs of individual students both Stewart and Erin Smith, the vocal instructor, tailor each activity so that all ideas can be shared, developed and eventually performed. “Theatre, and especially musical theatre, should be for all,” says Stewart. “You might want to sing, or dance - maybe you like to write, or have a particular idea about staging. There’s a place for everyone in the theatre.” The show that is created is an ensemble work, no leading roles or starring parts but instead each student has a chance to explore their own passion, learn a new skill and work as a team to bring a unique piece of musical theatre to the stage.
Scholarships for all New Hampshire Theatre Project camps are available thanks to generous support by Partners Bank, formerly SIS Bank. “We are delighted to be able to offer spaces to students regardless of financial need,” explains Stewart.
