New Hampshire Theatre Project presents
The Odyssey
By David Farr
Directed by Blair Hundertmark
New Hampshire Theatre Project’s 2006-07 mainstage season kicks off with the US premiere of The Odyssey by David Farr, artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London. Performed in England in 2005 to rave reviews, NHTP is honored to be the first American company to present this innovative adaptation of Homer’s classic tale. Framed around the issue of immigration and asylum, this is a provoking and humorous take on the epic journey of Odysseus, victorious conqueror of Troy whose return home took over 10 years. As tales go, The Odyssey has it all – romance, murder, intrigue, exotic locations and a man-eating Cyclops who keeps goats.
Directed by Blair Hundertmark, NHTP’s production of The Odyssey will turn the West End Studio Theatre inside out, staged in a circus-like atmosphere and infused with movement and music. Music director Agnes Charlesworth has composed a haunting soundscape using scales and rhythms derived from traditional Greek dance, Turkish pop, and Italian film scores.
The Odyssey’s regionally recognized and multi-talented cast includes Jim Burkholder, Chris Curtis, Blair Hundertmark, Kristan Raymond Robinson, Lisa Richardson, James Ryen, and musician Sam Goodall on violin. Guest artist Andrew Periale of Perry Alley Theatre will create original puppets for NHTP’s production. Bruce Morris will design set and lighting, and costumes will be designed by Maura Suter. The production team also includes Genevieve Aichele (Assistant Director), Meghann Beauchamp (Stage Manager), Gretchen Engle (Asst. Stage Manager), Taylor Rodgers (Propmaster), and Jen Yirak (Dramaturg).
Dedicated to innovation, education and excellence, NHTP is proud to offer a performance series that is unlike any other in the area. With international, national and regional ties, NHTP artists bring unique strengths home to the community. The Odyssey, like last year’s award-winning production of The Elephant Man, presents classical dramatic literature with contemporary design and staging.
