The Playwright's Lab, now in its second year, offers young writers the opportunity to tackle the craft of writing for theatre, in a supportive and challenging environment. This young writers group focuses on the creation of new works for the stage, though collaborative critique and technical skill building.
Attendance at all workshops, master classes, rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Although some conflicts can be accommodated with advance notice, The Playwright's Lab is a commitment that requires priority. Students are encouraged to learn about all aspects of writing classical, modern and experimental texts for theatre performance. Students will work as individuals, and in small and large groups to develop their writing; Playwright's Lab participants will also showcase their work along with the Youth Repertory Company performers.
FALL SESSION (October 17-November 28, 2017) - Skill-building sessions focused on theme, plot, story and dialogue -as well as the development of strategies for writing, including games, activities and processes. Students will also explore the work of historical and contemporary playwrights, providing context for their own work. The Lab meets on Tuesdays, 5:00-6:45 pm. A final showcase of work will be part of the Youth Repertory Company Scene Study performances on December 1-3. Tech rehearsals November 28-30.
WINTER SESSION (January 23 to April 15, 2018) - Students will develop their works for stage, with a focus on character, setting and creating dramatic tension. The Lab meets on Tuesdays, 5:00-6:45 pm, and will culminate with staged readings on March 30-31.
