NHTP SENIOR YOUTH REPERTORY COMPANY presents
The Skin of Our Teeth By Thornton Wilder
Directed by Genevieve Aichele
The NHTP Senior Youth Repertory Company presents Thornton Wilder’s 1941 wartime allegory about the comic trials of the Antrobus family as they survive one disaster after another. The Skin of Our Teeth has challenged actors, audiences and critics for over 60 years because, in playwright Paula Vogel’s words, Wilder does not shy away from the fact that “our gift for destruction and violence is as innate as our spirit to survive.” New Hampshire’s most famous playwright, Thornton Wilder is best known for his popular classic Our Town which was based on the town of Peterborough. But as Jeremy McCarter’s recent essay in the New York Times declares, plays like The Skin of Our Teeth prove Wilder to be one of America’s greatest playwrights and showcase his use of theatre to “present both the universal and the eternal.” As guest acting coach Kent Stephens says, “How often do you get to see the Ice Age, the Flood, and the Apocalypse for the price of one tickets?” The NHTP Youth Repertory Company, which includes 17 auditioned members from 12 different seacoast communities, is designed for students with a serious commitment to learning the craft of theatre, and offers teens an opportunity to perform provocative scripts grounded in classic dramatic literature. The Skin of Our Teeth is the culminating performance for this year-long training program.
